History

At Myton Park, the teaching of History contributes greatly to the development of every child. History teaches our children about the story of the people on Earth, the human story. The History Curriculum at Myton Park is carefully planned to ensure that our children are offered a high-quality education through an ambitious curriculum in which they experience a wide breadth of study and, by the end of each key stage, have embedded a body of procedural and semantic knowledge into their long-term memory.

Our curriculum distinguishes between subject topics and threshold concepts.  Subject topics are  the most specific aspects of subjects that are studied.  Threshold concepts tie together the subject topics into meaningful schema.  Through this “forwards-and-backwards engineering” of the curriculum, students return to the same concepts over and over, and gradually build understanding of them.  This ensures that Myton Park offers a progressive model of History teaching for all.

For each topic taught, knowledge webs support children to form strong, meaningful connections over a two-year period.  Within each subject topic, students gradually progress in their procedural fluency and semantic trength through three cognitive domains; basic, advancing and deep.  The goal for students is to display sustained mastery at the advancing stage of understanding by the end of each milestone and for the most able to have a greater depth of understanding at the deep stage.  The timescale for sustained mastery or greater depth is therefore two years of study.

At Myton Park we want our children to develop a curiosity to investigate and intrpret the past, have an overview of world history and have a deep understanding of historical chronology.  We want children to become Historians, find a passion for History and communicate this passion to all.
